The Seattle Art Dealers Association (SADA) is pleased to announce Century 21: Dealer’s Choice, an exhibition of Washington-based artists opening September 12 and continuing through November 21 at The Wright Exhibition Space in Seattle. The exhibition, at the generous invitation of Virginia and Bagley Wright, was jointly curated by individual SADA members and highlights 50 artists in different career stages whose work is felt to be particularly notable as we move forward into the 21st century.
Each SADA dealer was asked specifically not to choose artists from his or her own stable, but instead to select artists from the galleries of others including non-SADA galleries, and even consider unaffiliated artists. In addition, the SADA members were required to choose artists from three different age groups corresponding to emerging, mid-career and senior artists.
An important component of the exhibition is that each work of art will be accompanied by a bit of prose written by the selecting dealer. This is a unique opportunity for SADA members to provide the public with insight into their own particular aesthetics. Each artist will show one work, arrived at by mutual decision between the selecting gallery and individual artist, or the gallery representing the artist.
The title Century 21 suggests that this show, poised as it is at the beginning of the 21st century, looks to the future while it celebrates the past. Dealer’s Choice reflects the gamble of prediction, the pleasure of the game, and the opportunity for each dealer to declare their selections as important. The show is premised around a sense of democracy and generosity revealed by the willingness of dealers to participate in such an unusual show where they were each choosing artists in whom they had no personal or commercial stake.
Established in 1990, the SADA consists of the city’s foremost dealers committed to representing the highest standards of fine art. Elected by their peers, members of the association adhere to the principles of integrity and responsibility in working with artists, collectors, museum professionals and the entire cultural community. The association strives to create an atmosphere for the visual arts to thrive by providing informative programs for the public and organized events for artistic expression, while increasing awareness of Seattle as a major international art center.
